Sponsored by the Tourism Council of the Balearic Government, the Chamber Orchestra
"Isle of Mallorca" is the official orchestra of the "Winter in Mallorca" Festival. The orchestra was
created in February of 1998 with auditions of young musicians of very high quality coming from
several countries: Cuba, Holand, France, Germany, and from various parts of Spain, including
Seville, Bilbao, Madrid, Barcelona, as well as musicians from Mallorca and Menorca who realize
their professional careers around Europe.
In February of 1999 the orchestra was officially presented in the Auditorium of Palma de
Mallorca with great critical and public acclaim. Professionals from the musical world present at
the concert placed the orchestra among the best chamber orchestras in Spain.
The orchestra has played in several International Festivals based on Mallorca and Menorca.
They have recorded a CD with works by Tchaikowsky and Mozart (The Coronation Mass) and
have made a spectacular video for the cultural promotion of Mallorca.
In the year 2000 the orchestra has been invited to return to festivals in the Balearic islands,
and will tour Catalunya in August for the prestigious "La Caixa" series. They have been invited to
participate as resident orchestra in a new festival outside Vienna during the summer of 2001.
The stable component musicians of the orchestra, despite their relative youth, are also
regular members of other orchestras around Europe: the "Gustav Mahler" of Germany; the National
Orchestra of France; the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.
Barry Sargent,
Director and Concertino
Born in Cincinatti, USA, Barry Sargent studied in the Oberlin Conservatory with Andor
Foth, and contuined his studies in Paris with Gerard Poulet. While in Paris he met the cellist

concertino with Les Arts Florissants, Les Talents Liriques, and Seminario Musae with the counter-
tenor Gerard Lesne. He has also worked with Nicolas Harnoncourt, Ton Koopman, and Frans
Brüggen.
Currently he is first violin of the famous Spanish baroque group (BMG) "Al Ayre Español", is
frequently invited to lead the orchestra of the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, and is co-leader
of the Granada Orchestra. He is co-founder also of the Baroque Orchestra of Seville, and founding
director of the Isle of Mallorca chamber orchestra.
"I have an idea that the only thing which makes it possible to regard this
world we live in without disgust is the beauty which now and then men create out of
the chaos. The pictures they paint, the music they compose, the books they write, and
the lives they lead. Of all these the richest in beauty is the beautiful life. That is the
perfect work of art."
