The Zenke-Roggan Duo playing in the March Palace in Palma de Mallorca, 1999
In the fall of 1987, the directors of the B. March Foundation of Palma de Mallorca asked Patrick Meadows, artistic director of the International Festival of Deià, to present a concert plan for the March Palace. The Palace was constructed in the 1930´s, decorated by contemporary artist Sert, and it seemed logical to dedicate it to music from this century also. It was decided that since the ACA Foundation and other entities were already doing contemporary music, the March Palace would not enter that field. Thus the series "Classics of the XXth Century" came into being, filling a gap in the programming on the island, where there are some 400 chamber music concerts a year.
Each spring, during 15 years, there were five concerts, one every other week where groups from Mallorca, Spain, and other parts of the world perform works by Stravinsky, Bartok,. Lutoslavsky, Dohnanyi, Hindemith and other masters of the first half of the century.
Every year student performers and composers from the Conservatory of Palma also present their talents in the Palace.
Here is a list of the musicians and composers represented over the years.
